Learn the proper technique for using a metal round cigar cutter to get a clean, straight cut every time. Avoid common mistakes and enjoy a better smoke.

Quick Answer

A metal round basic cutter gives you a straight, clean cut that works well for most cigar shapes. Position the cutter so the blades cover the cap, then press firmly in one smooth motion.

Why a Straight Cut Matters

A straight cut removes the cap without damaging the wrapper, letting you draw smoke evenly. It works for parejos (straight-sided cigars) and most figurados, though torpedoes and belicosos benefit more from a V-cut or punch.

The Metal Round Basic Cutter uses stainless steel blades that stay sharp longer than budget cutters. Dull blades crush the wrapper instead of slicing it, which can unravel the cigar or make the draw too tight.

When Not to Use a Round Cutter

If your cigar has a pointed tip (torpedo, belicoso, perfecto), a straight cut removes too much of the taper and may reduce flavor concentration. For those shapes, consider a V-cutter or punch instead.

Very thick ring gauges (60+) can be tricky with smaller round cutters. Make sure the cutter's opening is wider than the cigar's diameter, or the blades will pinch the wrapper.

How to Cut a Cigar with a Metal Round Cutter

  1. Identify the Cap: Hold the cigar horizontally and look for the rounded end with a small disc of wrapper leaf (the cap). This is the only part you should cut. Cutting below the cap can cause the wrapper to unravel. If you see multiple cap layers, cut just below the top layer to preserve the structure.
  2. Position the Cutter: Open the blades fully and place the cutter over the cap so the blades sit about 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the tip. Keep the cutter perpendicular to the cigar—angled cuts create an uneven burn. Hold the cutter steady; a slight tilt will produce a lopsided cut that affects the draw.
  3. Make the Cut: Squeeze the handles firmly in one quick, smooth motion. Do not saw or twist—this can tear the wrapper. A clean straight cut removes the cap cleanly and exposes the filler tobacco. If the cutter feels sticky or requires extra force, the blades may need cleaning or sharpening.
  4. Check the Draw: Before lighting, take a few dry puffs. You should feel light resistance without having to suck hard. If the draw is too tight, trim another 1/16 inch. If too loose, you cut too much—next time take a smaller cut. A good draw is the best indicator of a proper cut. Adjust your technique based on what you feel.
